William felt his power falling away, and this time, he made
a controlled landing near his clothes, rolling across the sand so that he
extinguished his flames.
William rejoiced in his fiery flight, releasing the pent-up
power flow over his wings, trailing sparks high up enough that they couldn’t
harm Teresa or the others.
Bryant tried to get Brutus to look in his eyes, but Brutus
turned his gaze downward every time Bryant glanced his direction. Brutus’s
burns glared angrily in the sunshine.
Bryant
shouted with triumph as he sent the Gannetians scurrying for their lives like insects.
He burned the entire encampment to the ground as they ran.
William wanted to take Teresa’s hand, but he didn’t know if
he had the right. He couldn’t change the flames inside, but he hoped he could gain her trust.
At Gannet’s border, an army encampment greeted Bryant. He
lined his men up behind him, then torched the closest tent, sending the
Gannetians into chaos.
